Online Reading Volunteer

Description
We use books to fuel children’s natural love of stories, fire their imaginations, and encourage their appreciation of reading. Our projects not only improve literacy and confidence in children but also increase family wellbeing and bonding through the joy of sharing stories.
Where and When:
Our online reading service means you can join remotely from anywhere in the UK!
Time commitment: One evening a week (Regular Volunteer), one evening every other week (Semi-Regular Volunteer) or once every 3 weeks (Stand-In Volunteer) during school term times
Hours per week: 2
Days: Our projects run on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays from 4:30pm – 6:30pm
Volunteers only have sessions during school term times, so there are plenty of breaks throughout the year. Volunteers are also entitled to 2 absences per term. Overall regular volunteering would be for approximately 31 weeks of the year!
What’s Involved:
As a Doorstep Library reading volunteer, you’ll read with the same families online every week with access to a wide range of e-books to share with the children and encourage their love of reading.
You will:
Handpick books based on the children’s age, interests, and reading level
Join online Zoom sessions with your volunteer partner for 20-minute reading sessions
Select books for the children to keep at the end of term
Our unique home-based approach allows our volunteers to build trusting relationships with families, helping them to connect with the community and equip them with the skills they need to succeed later in life.
You will be fully trained in all aspects of becoming a Reading Volunteer so that you feel confident before starting sessions with families. You will receive regular contact with Doorstep Library staff members so that you are fully supported throughout your volunteer journey, especially during your trial period. You can receive additional training opportunities to develop your skills. We celebrate and recognise your time volunteering with us.
