Inventory Volunteer - Raf Museum Collection Storage (Staffordshire)

Ongoing

Description

See inside our Collections storage facility in Stafford and help us prepare to move our collection to a new facility.

What is an Inventory volunteer?

The RAF Museum has many items in its collection which are not currently on display. Our Inventory volunteers will ensure that all the items in our reserve collection have up-to-date records and are cleaned and packed ready to move from our current store outside Stafford to a new storage facility in Cosford

This role sits within the RAF Museum’s Midlands Development Programme which will transform our museum and our impact on the local community through a series of phased projects – engaging audiences who may not obviously identify with the RAF story by finding common interests and histories which link them. As part of this project, we are planning a new learning centre, outdoor spaces, collections hub and major exhibition.

What will I be doing?

The Inventory Volunteer role could encompass various tasks, which include:

  • Assessing objects’ condition

  • Dry cleaning objects using brushes, cloths and conservation-grade vacuum cleaners

  • Inputting information to our collections management system

  • Packing objects for safe transport and storage

How much time would I need to commit?

Morning and afternoon shifts are available Monday to Thursday and you are free to sign up for single or double shifts depending on your schedule, at a minimum of one shift per month. Flexibility is possible by agreement. Our Stafford site is not open on weekends.

We will invite suitable applicants to attend an open day to learn more about the role.

ROYAL AIR FORCE MUSEUM

ROYAL AIR FORCE MUSEUM

Arts, culture and heritage

The Royal Air Force Museum was established in 1972 as a legacy of the RAF’s fiftieth anniversary. Today we have two public sites in London and Cosford, and a third site which houses our reserve collection in Stafford. Our purpose is to share the story of the Royal Air Force, past, present and future - using the stories of its people and our collections in order to engage, inspire and encourage learning. We have 1.3 million items in our collection which we hold in trust for the people of the UK. We are an educational charity with a vision to inspire everyone with the RAF story - the people who shape it and its place in our lives. Our volunteers donate their time and enthusiasm in almost every department in our museum and at all three of our sites.
