Description

We are looking for welcoming and reliable volunteers to support our community café at the Rainbow Centre. Duties include taking customer orders, handling cash, preparing drinks and simple food, cleaning tables, washing up, and helping with cooking where appropriate. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys working with people, can work in a busy environment, and wants to contribute to a warm, friendly space for our clients and visitors. Training and support will be provided.

You will need to have the following skills in order to participate:

Previous experience of café work prefered but not necessary. This role requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check as part of our safeguarding responsibilities. Having a criminal record will not automatically prevent you from volunteering with us. We consider all information disclosed through the DBS process fairly and on an individual basis, taking into account its relevance to the role, the nature and circumstances of any offences, and the time that has passed. We follow the DBS Code of Practice and all relevant safeguarding legislation when handling disclosure information. Any disclosed information is treated confidentially, stored securely, and only used for the purpose of assessing suitability for this role.

Poverty and social justice

The Rainbow Centre has been supporting vulnerable people in Scarborough for almost 28 years, helping the homeless as well as those in crisis. The Centre offers a variety of essential services including: a foodbank, cafe, hot showers, laundry facilities, access to clothing, toiletries, and bedding, start-up packs for new homes, and a debt advice service. On average we provide food for around 1,000 people each month, and in 2024 carried out almost 20,000 critical interventions.
