The Salvation Army in Balham runs a drop-in hub where individuals can access practical support and guidance. As a Volunteer Client Signposter, you will work alongside clients to help them understand and access appropriate services — either through The Salvation Army or external agencies.

This role involves listening carefully to people’s stories, understanding their circumstances, and helping them navigate local and wider support systems. At times, you may advocate on a client’s behalf or assist them in contacting relevant services.

Location: Lochinvar Hall, Balham Salvation Army, 38 Balham High Road, London, SW12 6AH

Time Commitment: Thursdays, 9:30am–1:30pm (to be agreed with line manager)

The impact you'll have

Many individuals who attend the drop-in hub may be facing complex or challenging circumstances. By offering a listening ear and helping them access the right services, you play a direct role in reducing barriers to support.

Your involvement helps ensure clients are connected to appropriate local or specialist services, improving their stability and wellbeing. You will contribute to creating a welcoming and responsive community hub where people feel respected and empowered.

The skills you'll need

You will need to have the following skills in order to participate:

We are looking for volunteers who:

  • Have strong communication and listening skills
  • Are confident using IT (essential)
  • Are able to assess needs and signpost appropriately
  • Can work calmly in a busy or sometimes chaotic environment
  • Are non-judgemental and empathetic

Full training and ongoing support will be provided.
