UNIFORM EXCHANGE
Poverty and social justice
Uniform Exchange is a Huddersfield based charity, founded in 2011, that provides free pre-loved school uniforms to children and families across Kirklees. Our mission is simple but powerful: no child should be without a uniform and nothing wearable should go to waste. We work with all 182 schools in the area, redistributing tens of thousands of items each year, including coats, shoes, bags, PE kits and winter accessories. Last year alone, our volunteers helped provide over 11,000 children with more than 75,000 items of uniform, saving families over 1 million pounds and keeping roughly 50 tonnes of clothing out of landfill.
Volunteering is at the heart of everything we do. With a small team of five staff and over 30 dedicated volunteers, we run a wide variety of roles, all designed to be flexible and accessible. Volunteers help sort, fold and tag uniforms, pack orders for our pop-up school shops, assist in our charity shop and support collections and deliveries across Kirklees. Whether you have a few hours to spare, want a regular commitment or prefer a one-off team volunteering day, there is a role that makes a real difference.
By volunteering with Uniform Exchange, you are not just helping children access school uniforms; you are also supporting families in need, promoting sustainability and building community spirit. Every item you handle, every order you pack and every event you help run directly impacts a child's confidence, wellbeing and access to education.
Joining our volunteer team means being part of a passionate, friendly group committed to tackling child poverty and clothing waste in Kirklees, all while gaining valuable experience and the satisfaction of making a tangible difference in local lives.
