Blether Buddies - Befriender Needed In Tulse Hill, London Sw2

Remote
Ongoing

Description

Mrs W is in her 90's and lives in Tulse Hill, London SW2. a short walk from the station and local bus stops. Her husband passed away many years ago and she is estranged from her only daughter and grandchild; her surviving siblings are still in Scotland. She spends most of her days alone at home but goes out when she can, mainly to do shopping and to visit her hairdresser.

Mrs W is very pleasant, easy to talk to and be with, but lacks confidence in herself, she worries about how she is perceived. Neighbour's drop by and offer to help when they can, but she is hesitant to ask for help when she needs it, and doesn't like to bother them.

She is reluctant to form new friendships fand fears loss, so she will need a befriender who is sure they can commit for the longer term, and perhaps someone who can encourage her to have more confidence in herself. Visiting would be a pleasure, she is friendly, welcoming and chatty and she would greatly appreciate having someone pop in once a week, or perhaps once a fortnight for a chat, tea and biscuits.

Our client is available on any afternoon apart from Sundays.

Expectations

  • Friendly, reliable, committed, English speaking, good communication skills for listening and talking.

Benefits

Our befrienders often tell us how they benefit from the experience of befriending as much as the person they support, many stay involved for much longer than six months, but only because they enjoy what they do.

You could build new skills, meet new people, fill time and take part in a rewarding activity. We cover out of pocket expenses, provide training and ongoing support, and can give references for work if needed.

People with poor health, are more likely to experiences loneliness and social isolation, those who are lonely and isolated, are more likely to suffer with poor health, it is a downward spiral, and your time and companionship would make a difference, plus, like other Blether Buddies, you might actually look forward to your meetings!

ScotsCare Befrienders do not provide practical help at home, or personal care, more so, friendly conversation, quality time, and a non-judgemental listening ear for one or two hours a week. All expenses are paid for travel and refreshments.

An Enhanced DBS for volunteers will be processed and may be useful for other voluntary, unpaid roles. Two references are also required.
